There are many misconceptions concerning interfacing sequencers, drum machines and synthesizers to a tape recorder. The key to making them sync up with a tape recorder is the sync tone. The Linndrum, DMX, DSX, Drumtracks, TR909, MSQ700, Microcomposer 202, MPU-401, Drumulator, RX-15,RX-11, MXR , Polysequencer, SCI/Commodore 64 sequencer, PPG Wave 2.2 & 2.3 and the Oberheim DX (with a mod ) can all generate a type of sync tone called FSK. Each one of the above mentioned units can read this tone after it has been printed on tape and sync up again to it.

I’ve dedicated this month’s column to SMPTE ( Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers ) so that the readers of Keyboard Magizine can having a better understanding of this most perplexing subject. First, SMPTE in relation to timecode, is based around a twenty- four hour clock. It divided up into hours, minutes, seconds like a clock and frames ( a division of seconds ) and lastly subframes ( a divsion of frames ). In 1967 the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers can upon a standard assistment for the value of one frame.

With the advent of sampling technology came a whole new way to look at keyboards. Unlike conventional synthesizers this new breed of sampling instrument has given us the freedom of hearing what we want, sampling it and playing it back by triggering the sampled sound(s) from the keyboard. After a sound has been sampled it may then be synthesized using the sampling intrument's VCF, VCF envelope and the VCA.

The SBX-80 uses SMPTE time code as its basis to pull off the magic it performs. SMPTE which stands for The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, is based on a clock, i.e. hours, minutes, seconds, frames ( a division of seconds ) and bits ( a division of frames. Seconds are usually divided into 30 frames ( audio ), 24 frames ( film ) and 25 frames ( video and european standard ). Frames are usually divided into bits.
